Geekvape Aegis Legend 3 Kit Review

At the last Vapexpo, Geekvape turned up in a Porsche! With the brand-new Aegis Legend 3 kit, plus a collector's edition created in collaboration with Porsche, the Aegis Legend 3 Carrera (max power of 230W), not yet available. As a bit of trivia, Geekvape happens to sponsor racing cars on the competition circuit. But back to our kit, which brings a few genuinely innovative and practical new features for vapers.

As a reminder, the Aegis Legend e-cigarette is the kit built around Geekvape's dual 18650 battery Aegis box. A box we know well, multi-material, resistant to dust and water, and IP68 certified.

A Tri-proof box that's afraid of nothing…

With a maximum power output of 200 watts, this is the kit for direct-lung inhalation par excellence. The mod naturally comes paired with THE sub-ohm clearomiser designed for that very purpose, the Z(eus) Tank. And in its very latest version, the Z Fli. Released a few months back now, the Z Fli caused a stir with its top-cap design, unlike anything seen before. A clever mechanism that allows for an ultra-secure refill.

An opening that's actually rather handy

However, what's even more surprising about this latest kit is the technological innovation brought to the Aegis Legend 3 box. And it's a big one. Remember the button on the side of the Aegis Legend mod that locked the box (to stop you accidentally pressing the switch)? Gone, vanished, that button – made obsolete and dethroned by a stroke of genius! Indeed, vapers no longer lock the mod, they unlock it! Let's take a quick look at how that works.

The Aegis Legend 3 box is fitted with sensors around its grip, beneath the polyurethane coating that boxes of this type usually have. When the box isn't in use, the sensors detect no contact and go into standby. A fairly relative standby, mind you, as the mod is extremely responsive. The slightest touch of a fingertip is enough to get the box ready to fire. The first question that quite reasonably comes to mind is: "If I put the box in my pocket, will it switch on if I press against my pocket?" The answer is no, because the mod detects the natural electricity present in our bodies. Rather clever, isn't it?

It's genuinely impressive: the sensors are particularly responsive (even through thin gloves), especially at the back of the grip. No contact, and standby kicks in immediately, the screen switches off: energy is saved, and you get more vaping time out of it. Which is just as well, because the AS 4.0 chipset has more than one trick up its sleeve.

There are a few small animations on the graphic interface, and notably a power-hungry Boosting mode. Boosting mode automatically sets itself to the maximum power the coil can handle. Smart mode, on the other hand, sticks within the power range assigned to the coil. Take the Z0.4 XM 0.4Ω coil, for example: its range runs from 50W to 60W. The box won't go above 60 watts, but if you wanted to vape at, say, 45 watts, no, that's not possible. The mod stays at 50 watts.

For that, you'll need to use the classic Power mode. And you can lock in the wattage using the Button Lock option, found in a menu that remains intuitive, don't worry. You can also save your settings using Memory mode. If you've got several atomisers, clearomisers or rebuildables, the chipset is designed to remember your preferred wattage for each one. You can store up to five profiles in Memory mode.

Navigating the mod's menu is well thought-out. Three quick presses on the main button and you're into a clear, fairly self-explanatory menu. The "Lock Setting" option does deserve a bit of explanation, though. The Touch Lock setting controls whether the grip's automatic locking is switched on. Button Lock, meanwhile, locks in the wattage you've chosen. Finally, Unlock Mode clears all of these locks at once.

As for the rest, fans of Geekvape, Aegis boxes and other Zeus clearomisers will know the drill by now. Airflow at the top of the tank to prevent leaks. A particularly wide-open airflow for vapour. It's the clearomiser of choice for fans of fresh fruity flavours, even though these juices tend to be coil-killers. For a richer flavour rendering, including with fruity juices, you can confidently use the Z0.4 XM 0.4Ω coil. 50W works nicely too, and the coil lasts longer.

The Aegis Legend 3 kit and its Z Fli remain, unsurprisingly, a kit for demanding direct-lung vaping. The real surprise is this new way of using an electronic mod. Because this automatic unlocking feature, beyond the extra safety it brings, is also genuinely useful for boosting battery life. Could this be filed under "the future of vaping"?
